TOXIC POSITIVITY – THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS

Positivity in law

Toxic positivity refers to the overemphasis on maintaining a positive outlook at all costs, even in the face of genuine difficulties, situations or emotions. While positivity can be beneficial, toxic positivity dismisses and invalidates real feelings of fatigue, frustration or pain. For instance, when someone is struggling and receive clichés like "just stay positive", "it could be worse," or “you will adapt”, their authentic emotions are often minimsed or ignored. These comments, while well-intentioned, can minimize the employee's legitimate stress and frustration.

Positive thinking can manifest in various ways, but not all are inherently beneficial. If the pursuit of positivity undermines your emotional processing, it can actually lead to negative outcomes.

In a law firm where maintaining a positive demeanor on behalf of clients is mandatory, toxic positivity can become a significant issue. Lawyers may feel compelled to constantly project optimism, even in challenging situations, leading to the suppression of genuine emotions and concerns. This relentless pursuit of positivity can invalidate the authentic experiences of both the lawyers and their clients, creating an environment where stress and dissatisfaction are masked rather than addressed. Over time, this can result in burnout, decreased job satisfaction, and a lack of trust within the team, ultimately undermining the firm’s effectiveness

Another example is when a team faces a setback on a project. Rather than addressing the issue constructively, the response might be, "Don’t worry, it’s no big deal." This kind of toxic positivity can prevent the team from openly discussing problems, seeking solutions, or even acknowledging the need for additional resources or support.

In contrast, acknowledging and validating emotions, even the negative ones, fosters a more supportive and realistic approach to mental health. Embracing the full spectrum of human experiences, including the challenging ones, allows individuals to process their struggles more effectively. A well balanced work environment where attorneys deal with intricate legal problems on behalf of their clients, allows for more authentic and empathetic interactions, where clients feel truly heard and understood. This approach fosters trust and strengthens the attorney-client relationship, as clients are more likely to share their genuine concerns and emotions. Overall, dealing with toxic positivity can enhance client satisfaction and loyalty, contributing to a more supportive and effective service environment.

By implementing strategies like open communication, provision of a support structure, promoting work-life balance and fostering a supportive environment, you will not only build a strong team, but trust and a team that will stand together regardless of the challenges they face.

At Gittins Attorneys we prioritise mental health alongside positivity. By fostering open communication and support structures, we build a resilient and empathetic team. This approach enhances client trust and satisfaction, leading to more effective legal solutions.
