“QUIET QUITTING”; A NEW PANDEMIC?


It seems that the majority of South Africans have all but forgotten the Covid-19 pandemic, and for good reason it had a significant impact on the daily lives of many, if not all South Africans. Gone are the days of wearing masks and fearing that the person behind you in the shops was standing too close.


However, many business owners, whilst the rest of us try put Covid-19 behind us, are still feeling the impact of Covid-19 and from a source that many businesses likely didn’t expect; the employees.


In 2022, a new trend emerged which has been penned “Quiet Quitting”. Whilst it is believed to have started as a movement in China by the younger generations as a means to break the norm of giving all to your work and attempting to have a balanced work-life lifestyle, the definition and understanding of Quiet Quitting has since broadened to include employees who are just simply lazy.


Despite our struggling economy where job security would seemingly be a priority, many South African employers are seeing a significant rise in employees who are Quiet Quitting.


The risk to employers is severe as employees who are Quiet Quitting become disengaged and disconnected from their responsibilities, work culture and teammates which only results in a general degradation of overall performance and productivity.

A healthy work-life balance is essential for a productive employee. A happy employee is a productive employee however in a time where the economy is in recovery it is ever more important for everyone to remain diligent which makes it increasingly difficult to provide and live a more balanced lifestyle.


Something to consider though for the employees who are Quiet Quitting, maybe without even realizing they are, is that Quiet Quitting not only affects your job security in your current job, as a simple failure or refusal to perform or follow instructions can result in dismissal, it could also impact on future job prospects.

Employers generally want to assist and skill up their employees who are interested and engaged with their workplace, whether through promotions, study opportunities or salary increases.
